Sightings
Walking Rocks?

Query: When I was in Death Valley earlier this year, I saw some enormous 750-pound rocks that appear to travel across the desert on their own. I remembered your article about rock tortoises, and wondered if that’s what these rocks could be?

Corn of Plenty (Part 4 of 4): A Field Guide by Dr. Midas Welby

Corns of the Air: Air-corns utilize their horns for jousting, playing tic-tac-toe, and spearing food in mid-flight. Air-corns often lurk undetected in trees, wood piles, and rain gutters. When bored, they use their horns to ring the doorbells of unsuspecting humans. When the door begins to open, the air-corn flies away.

Going On Hiatus

December 6, 2014: I am loving college, but I have to admit, I’m overwhelmed.

You Can Help!

Pine Cone Feeders

A Present For Imaginaries: When winter comes, I get concerned about providing extra shelter from the elements for Imaginaries. Recently, I read about people who build wildlife brush shelters out of branches and plants in their yards, and thought this was a great idea.

Saying Hello

Salutations: When I heard that the hoof prints of a centaur had been identified (see Sightings), I began to wonder what I would do if I ever met one face to face.

I began to do research, and discovered that if I should ever meet a centaur, it would be improper to say Hello.

The respectful way to greet a centaur is to avoid direct eye contact and turn your head slightly to the left, neither raising nor lowering your chin. If the centaur pauses or otherwise indicates that he is aware of your presence, you should touch your heart and then your forehead with the back of the thumb of your left hand.

Centaurs have chosen to separate themselves from humankind. They understand themselves to be a highly-intelligent but flawed species, subject to pride and to violence, and have decided that their continued survival would be threatened if they allowed their way of life to be infiltrated by many of our human customs and technologies, such as our interest in acquiring material possessions, and the development of sophisticated weaponry. It is not rudeness that would lead a centaur to act as if you are not present, only his desire to preserve the way of life that works best for his kind. The more we are able show our respect for the choices of the centaurs, the more likely we are to be able to co-exist together peaceably.

If you happen to be in a centaur’s way, it is correct to back up a few paces to allow him to pass, but you should never turn away from him.

Should a centaur should ever address you directly, do not speak or answer unless asked a direct question. Answer briefly and respectfully, but without any salutation such as “mister” or “sir” that would indicate inequality of rank. Centaurs live in a classless society, and believe that all beings, living or dead, animate or inanimate, are of equal rank.

It remains unknown how it is that centaurs may greet one another when humans are not around. - BUG, Field Agent, Iranigami
