Walking Rocks?

Query: When I was in Death Valley earlier this year, I saw some enormous 750-pound rocks that appear to travel across the desert on their own. I remembered your article about rock tortoises, and wondered if that’s what these rocks could be?

Corn of Plenty (Part 4 of 4): A Field Guide by Dr. Midas Welby

Corns of the Air: Air-corns utilize their horns for jousting, playing tic-tac-toe, and spearing food in mid-flight. Air-corns often lurk undetected in trees, wood piles, and rain gutters. When bored, they use their horns to ring the doorbells of unsuspecting humans. When the door begins to open, the air-corn flies away.

Going On Hiatus

December 6, 2014: I am loving college, but I have to admit, I’m overwhelmed.

Pine Cone Feeders

A Present For Imaginaries: When winter comes, I get concerned about providing extra shelter from the elements for Imaginaries. Recently, I read about people who build wildlife brush shelters out of branches and plants in their yards, and thought this was a great idea.

Report Animal Harassment

Caring For All Creatures: If an animal of any kind is being abused or hurt, it’s always the right thing to report it to the authorities. That goes for Imaginaries or non-Imaginaries, domesticated or wild, and endangered or common. Any creature being treated cruelly needs our help.

I know my job as an Iranigami field agent is to preserve, protect and defend the Imaginaries, which includes shielding them from discovery. But it’s more important to protect an Imaginary from harm than it is to shield them from public view.

So if I witness an Imaginary being treated cruelly, I know I must report it to those who can do something about it, just as I would report it if someone’s pet were being abused.

It’s illegal everywhere in the United States to hurt animals, and that includes the Imaginaries. Cases of animal cruelty can be reported to the local humane society, animal control, or the ASPCA, but if you don’t know how to contact any of these, it can always be reported directly to the police. If someone makes the call, the police have to investigate, so don’t hesitate to call if you know of a case of animal abuse.

There are three things to remember if you see a case of animal cruelty:

(1) Don’t interfere directly. Like Bogs and Murks, sometimes people who treat animals badly are the kind of people who would treat a child badly too.

(2) Try to involve an adult. The police generally take children more seriously if their parents or teachers make the report with them.

(3) Have the facts written down – who, what, when, where – before making the call, so that the police or animal control people will have the specifics. If you can, get photos, but don’t put yourself into a dangerous situation just to get the shot. Like I say, animal abusers can be as dangerous as Bogs and Murks.

It seems to me that the most important thing I can do as a human is to learn how to be humane. The word humanity means both “people” and “kindness.” That tells me everything I need to know about becoming a better me. - BUG, Field Agent, Iranigami
